Introduction

Ronald Kingsley Read designed Shavian, a phonetic script for English. After using Shavian with different speakers from around the world, Read designed Quikscript, another phonetic script for English designed to be faster to write. Read released Quikscript in 1966.

Punctuation

Punctuation is largely the same as in normal written English (often called Orthodox in the Quikscript community). However, parentheses in running text are angled, not curved (see U+E66E and U+E66F). Parentheses used elsewhere — such as in numbered lists where the numbers are set off from the rest of the text — can be rounded (U+0028 and U+0029). Finally, apostrophes are usually unnecessary.

Quikscript does not have a separate upper and lower case. A namer dot (U+00B7 MIDDLE DOT) is used to mark proper names.

Glyph Variation

Quikscript can be written in a manner where all letters are separate from each other. This way of writing is called Junior Quikscript. More advanced Quikscript users use features of Senior Quikscript such as ligation, half-letters, and alternate letterforms.

Ligation

Junior Quikscript, much like Latin and Shavian, is unligated. This style is suitable for beginners. More advanced Junior Quikscript writers will avoid lifting their pen between letters when possible.

Some Quikscript fonts that automatically ligate may do so across syllable boundaries. If this behavior is undesirable, add a U+200C ZERO WIDTH NON-JOINER between the two letters in question.

Half Letters

Both QUIKSCRIPT LETTER DAY and QUIKSCRIPT LETTER ZOO can be written so they both start and end at the baseline, as opposed to starting at the Short (x-height) height and ending at the baseline.

Similarly, QUIKSCRIPT LETTER PEA can both start and end at the Short height when connected to a subsequent Tall letter such as QUIKSCRIPT LETTER KEY or another QUIKSCRIPT LETTER PEA.

This proposal deliberately omits encoding half-letters as its author believes that glyph selection should be handled at the font layer using OpenType features such as standard ligatures (liga) or stylistic sets.

Alternate Letterforms

To reduce the number of intraword pen lifts, Read created two alternate letterforms. ALTERNATE UTTER is for when an [ə] sound precedes a letter that only connects to the previous letter at the baseline — like THAW, VIE, SEE, (maybe) ZHIVAGO, HE, OOLONG, MAY, and LOW.

Similarly, ALTERNATE NO is for when an n sound precedes a letter that only connects leftward at the baseline.

In some cases, ALTERNATE NO is best following a particular letter, often SHE for words ending in -tion.

As with half letters, this proposal deliberately omits encoding alternate letterforms for QUIKSCRIPT LETTER UTTER and QUIKSCRIPT LETTER NO as its author believes that glyph selection should be handled at the font layer using OpenType features such as standard ligatures (liga) or stylistic sets.

Collation

While Read’s own manual establishes an order for most letters, AX, EXAM, LOCH, and LLAN are absent from the main list of 40.

Identifiers

None of these characters ought to be permitted in identifiers.

Historical Notes

Some fonts use U+E67F for the namer dot.

Some (all?) fonts have left and right angled parentheses for U+0028 LEFT PARENTHESIS and U+0029 RIGHT PARENTHESIS.

The letter name of “J’ai” was replaced with “Zhivago” for the [ʒ] sound.

The letter name of “-ing” was replaced with “oolong” for the [ŋ] sound.
